Dodgers’ James Loney Involved in DUI Car Crash
The Los Angeles Dodgers are looking into an incident involving first basemen James Loney who was apparently arrested for suspicion of DUI last month.
According to reports, Loney sideswiped a Mini Cooper, Toyota Prius and Mercedes Benz with his 2009 Maserati while driving westbound on the 101 near Sherman Oaks. The incident, which occurred on the evening of November 14th, lead to Loney, 27, being arrested at the scene.
Police and paramedics who responded to the car accident noted Loney's unusual behavior and arranged for him to be transported to a local hospital for further tests. Reportedly, Loney had stopped in the fast lane after making contact with the other cars. When the three drivers approached the car to speak with him, they noted that Loney had passed out behind the wheel. He abruptly awoke and upon seeing the other drivers, attempted to flee the scene, subsequently crashing his car a second time.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Loney appeared to be under the influence of either drugs or alcohol at the time of the accident but the results of a blood test taken shortly after have not yet been released. Loney has not been charged with any crimes in connection to the car accident and the Dodgers say they will continue to investigate the incident.
While Loney will certainly have to reimburse the other drivers for the damage to their vehicles, he is fortunate that no one was seriously injured or killed as a result of the accident. Had he harmed another individual through his negligent driving, the victims and/or their families may have had grounds to file a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit against him. Under California law, he could have been forced to pay thousands or even millions of dollars in compensation for their medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering.
