San Bernardino Car Accident Leaves 1 Dead, 8 Injured
Eight people were injured and one driver was killed following a car accident during a high-speed police pursuit in San Bernardino.
According to police reports, the incident began when law enforcement attempted to make a traffic stop on a white Honda Civic. The driver of the car, 42-year-old San Bernardino resident Marvin Cavil Shelton, sped away down Mount Vernon Avenue.
Shelton continued to evade police, driving at speeds of approximately 80 miles per hour. During the pursuit, Shelton also turned off the car's headlights. According to the California Highway Patrol, he then lost control of the car, careening into the northbound lanes of Mount Vernon Avenue. Shelton's vehicle then struck a Toyota Tacoma, a Ford Econoline van and a Honda Accord at the intersection of 5th Street and Mount Vernon.
Shelton, a recent parolee, was killed in the accident. His two passengers, Brenton Sterling, 22, and Ray Nelson, 25, another parolee living in the Highland area, were transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton to receive treatment for serious injuries.
The six occupants of the other vehicles involved in the crash were treated for minor injuries.
This tragic accident demonstrates how one person's negligence can alter someone's life irrevocably. While the person responsible for causing the car accident was killed, his surviving family may face personal injury lawsuits from the other victims involved. Depending on the extent of their injuries, they may require long-term hospitalization, physical therapy and corrective surgery to achieve a full recovery. These medical bills, coupled with a decrease in wages caused by an inability to work could leave the victims facing a financial firestorm through no fault of their own.
