Distracted driving can potentially cause a serious or fatal car accident.

Distracted driving is becoming an increasingly common phenomenon and some form of distraction is believed to be linked to as much as 80% of car accidents, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Knowing what distractions to avoid can help you stay safe on the road and potentially avoid an accident.

Common Driving Distractions

  • Communication devices - Talking on a cellphone, even if you're using a hands-free device, can be a significant distraction for many drivers. A survey conducted by the NHTSA in December 2011 indicated that approximately two-thirds of all drivers regularly answer calls while driving. While the percentage of drivers who send or receive texts was reportedly lower, it is still considered a major distraction.
  • Talking to passengers - Some studies have suggested that talking to a passenger in your vehicle can be just as distracting as talking on the phone. This can be particularly true for younger drivers who may be riding with friends or parents who frequently ride with children.
  • Eating while driving - While you may not think having a snack on the road can detract from your driving ability, eating while you're behind the wheel can actually be very distracting. Trying to juggle food or drinks and the steering wheel can potentially result in a serious crash.
  • Grooming - For many drivers, it's not unusual to groom themselves while driving, especially if they're running late. For women, this can mean putting on makeup or styling hair. For men, it can mean a quick morning shave. While you may be concerned with your appearance, taking your eyes off the road to apply that second coat of mascara may lead to disaster.
  • Other distractions - There are a variety of other things that can cause you to lose focus while behind the wheel. Changing the stereo, adjusting your seat and turning the heater or air conditioner on or off are all activities that can take your eyes and mind off the road. If you're a smoker, the few seconds it takes to light a cigarette may be all it takes to send your vehicle off the road. Daydreaming, sightseeing or even singing along to your favorite song can also be potential distractions.

The California Department of Motor Vehicles offers drivers several tips to avoid a distracted driving accident. These include:

  • Staying focused.
  • Paying attention.
  • Expecting the unexpected.
  • Ensuring that all passengers are buckled-up properly.
  • Avoiding tailgating.
  • Allowing sufficient time to get where you need to go.
  • Checking to make sure your vehicle is in good working order.
  • Avoiding driving while tired or upset.
